"Time Capsule Proposal"
NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE

Two friends of mine through music are also well-known scientists: Dr. David Sulzer of Columbia University and Jaron Lanier, known for his work in the area of virtual reality.

Jaron was invited to design an archive for the text of the Times' Sunday Magazine that would survive all varieties of abuse: floods, overpopulation, nuclear attack, etc. His solution was to encode the information into the non-active intron strands of cockroach DNA (sort of the 'Styrofoam packing peanuts' of genetic material). Cockroaches are famous for their unaltering genetic durability, and their ability to withstand most types of Armageddon...

Dave was the consultant on the biological end, and I was asked to do the 'diagrams' (which were admitedly non-technical, but did serve to clarify the point)...

This proposal was one of the finalists, and was featured in a display in the Museum of Natural History here in New York... well, ultimately the Times went with a more standard time capsule, (which resembled a huge stainless-steel fortune cookie), but it was a pleasure working with these guys...
